Three traps when buying Procurement education.

The World is full of trickery. Money is a precious commodity. Be careful when you buy.

Identifying effective Procurement education is not easy. It is also hard to find value for money in this sector. If you haven't yet explored the quality and price of traditional Procurement education, we encourage you to do so before reading further.

Trap #1: Buying Certification if you don't need it.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is overspending on expensive Procurement certification. While some organisations ask for certification, the de facto professional standard is and will always remain a Bachelor Degree, which sits several levels above Procurement certification. The purpose of a certification is to set an objective minimum standard. That standard is low, and the units of competence are typically too theoretical and sanitised to replace real, workable Procurement knowledge. Much of what you will study isn't actually Procurement, but business subjects. If you get an interview, you will only be successful if you can convince Interviewers by your knowledge that you are the most competent person to perform a job's responsibilities.

You will only be successful if you convince Interviewers you can perform a job's responsibilities.

Trap #2: Academics pretending to be Procurement Specialists.

It amazes us how many Procurement lecturers have a Masters degree or PhD, but when they speak, it becomes obvious they have little, or no recent, working experience. It is not unreasonable to ask why a Procurement Specialist would swap an engaging, high paying job for a comparatively low-paid academic post. If the purpose of expensive Procurement education is to learn how to perform at work, should not the teacher have actual current work knowledge?

Many lecturers are academics with outdated strategic Procurement experience.

Trap #3 Not understanding the real price.

The price of most Procurement education is outrageous. You can pay hundreds of US Dollars for a two-day course. Courses that extend beyond a couple of days usually cost thousands of Dollars. Many providers offer discounts if you buy useless Membership or you pay upfront. There are fees to write exams, fees get a certificate, and there are a raft of hidden administration fees. One of the key Procurement Skills is understanding Total Contract Value. Buying education is no different to what you buy at work - you must understand the TCV or you could find yourself unable to complete a course you started.

Courses are full of hidden fees. You have to be careful when buying tertiary education.
